How to build and submit a Universal App for distribution on the App Store with the iOS 4 SDK

Mauro Dalu

Today I’ve been working on submitting an update to our popular Catholic Prayers database app: it’ll be our first Universal application to hit the App Store. Ever since we upgraded to the latest SDK we can only build for iOS 4, but we’ve set the iPhone OS Deployment Target to be 3.1.3. That way, our users should be able to run the app on devices running iPhone OS 3.x.

Xcode includes project templates for iPad apps and has a menu command (Project > Upgrade Current Target for iPad) that helps you get the project setup correctly when you want to add iPad support to your existing iPhone project. The Upgrade command gives you two options…

More than 1 million iPads sold, iPad 3G sold out, international sales just starting

Mauro Dalu

Apple has sold nearly 90 million iPhone OS devices worldwide, and recently announced it has sold more than a million iPad devices. Meanwhile, the iPad 3G remains completely sold out in the U.S. weeks after its release.

“One million iPads in 28 days — that’s less than half of the 74 days it took to achieve this milestone with iPhone,” said Apple CEO Steve Jobs. “Demand continues to exceed supply,” he claimed, “and we’re working hard to get this magical product into the hands of even more customers.”

iTunes Connect: Chrome works better than Safari

Mauro Dalu

Every time I get to upload an update to one of our iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad apps, I get frustrated by a number of things within iTunes Connect (itunesconnect.apple.com). In this post I want to focus on the total lack of feedback on the upload progress of the app binaries.

In Safari the spinner on the “Upload Binary” page can mean anything: is my app uploading or is the browser just hanging? Should I hit Cancel and retry?… Dory would say “just keep spinning”…

iPad ready for the big launch with exclusive apps, 30,000 free books, adult content

Mauro Dalu

Analyst Katy Huberty with Morgan Stanley said suppliers for the iPad have currently forecast 2.5 million iPads to be shipped from March to May 2010: Apple would ship between 8 million and 10 million by the end of 2010. This number is much higher than the expectation of 5 million that was forecasted so far. The upward revisions to iPad build rates “point to strong initial pre-orders.”

While video demonstrations of the iPad software including Safari browser, iBooks, Keynote, Pages and Numbers have been posted on Apple’s Web site, with videos that show many uses of the iPad, including its ability to be docked and utilized as a digital picture frame, how are Apple and the developers community preparing to the iPad launch?

iTunes Connect: now you can schedule price changes and release dates!

Mauro Dalu

Now you can schedule a series of price changes for those apps that will go into effect automatically on their target dates, effectively being able to plan promotions and do some real marketing on your apps on autopilot once you’ve planned your campaign (standing ovation please!).

iTunes Connect is Apple’s developers and publishers portal, which is notoriously not a great web app. Its features are really bare-bones and when you work with it, you feel like stuck in a pre Web 2.0 era, especially for people like us who are used to build and deal with cutting edge Rails web apps.

So every time Apple’s team adds a minor feature is an event to celebrate for us :) …

iTunes Sales Reports Analytics: a closer look to appFigures

Mauro Dalu

appFigures is a reporting platform for iPhone developers that automatically downloads and visualizes iTunes Connect sales data with App Store reviews and ranks for all of their apps.

We have been using appFigures for a while now and are pretty happy with it. Before we started using appFigures, we had no reliable and fast way to see how our sales were going and no real way to keep track of the effectiveness of our marketing activities.

Apple removes “do-nothing” apps from the store

Mauro Dalu

Another change in policy for Apple regarding the App Store. Some developers said the company began removing applications Apple felt provided “minimum user functionality,” such as one that simply quacked like a duck.
